Everything you might want to know about booking Gary’s Loft — organized by topic. Anything not covered here? Email gary@garysloft.com or call 212-244-0970.
28 West 36th Street, New York, NY 10018. We occupy the top three floors & the roof of a twelve story building.
We’ll book almost anything, but we are primarily booked for events and shoots (TV/Film, video, commercials, photoshoots, etc).
Yes, you can book any combination of our floors together. We typically require that you book an interior space when booking the outdoor Roof Deck.
We are available to book 24/7, 365 days a year.
Just email us at gary@garysloft.com. Include as many important details as possible (dates and floors you’re interested in, what type of booking you’re looking for, how many people will be in the space roughly, etc.) We’ll get back to you as soon as possible.
Our full rate cards will be sent to you when you send an inquiry to gary@garysloft.com. We have different pricing options for events, large video/film shoots, and smaller still photography shoots.
Just send us an email (gary@garysloft.com) with the dates that you are interested in, and we’ll let you know what we have available on those dates.
Simply let us know which dates you want to hold and which spaces you prefer, and we’ll let you know if we can give you a 1st or 2nd Hold.
If you’re the first client to request a hold for a certain studio on a date, then we can give you the 1st Hold. This means that you have the option to book first if another client is ready to book. So if you have a 1st Hold and we get a request from another client to book the space and day that you are holding, they place a challenge, then we’ll give you 24 hours to either book the space first or release it. A 2nd Hold just means that someone else has a 1st Hold already and you just need to challenge them for the space when ready to book.
No.
When you’re ready to book, just let us know which days and spaces you want to book, then we’ll send over a request for some info so we can draw up a contract for you. To confirm the booking we require a signed contract and full payment of the rental fee (in most cases). For event bookings we do require a $1,000 refundable security deposit up front on top of the rental fee.
Yes, we have a basic liability insurance requirement for all bookings here. The full details will be sent along with your contract when you’re ready to book.
Once we have a signed contract for a booking, we turn away all other clients who are interested in booking your space on your dates. So the rental fee is due whether you end up using the space or not. We’re always open to discussing cancellation options on a case by case basis, but the ‘no cancellation policy’ is what we have to include on our contracts to cover ourselves from last minute cancellations.
We are located just around the corner from the 34th Street–Herald Square subway station (B, D, F, M, N, Q, R, & W trains), and are 10 minute walks from the 34th Street–Penn Station subway station (1, 2, 3, A, C, & E trains) and the 33rd Street subway station (4 & 6 trains). We’re also a 15 minute walk from Grand Central Station (42nd Street & Park Ave), a 10 minute walk from Penn Station (8th Ave & 34th Street), and a 2 minute walk from the 33rd Street PATH Train Station.
We don’t have any designated parking spaces. Parking on our block is all metered, public street parking (meter must be fed every three hours 6am–6pm on weekdays, every six hours 6pm–midnight weekdays, every six hours 6am–12am Saturdays), and you must have commercial plates to park from 6am–6pm on weekdays. There is a parking garage on our block for non-commercial vehicles.
Everything loads in and out via our freight elevator which is located directly in our lobby at 28 West 36th Street, the only entrance to the building. Anyone loading in or out should speak to the loft manager on site (contact details to be provided prior to your booking), or speak with the building’s doorman, and one of them will operate the freight elevator for you. It’s usually very easy to find a spot for your vans and trucks directly in front of our building or at least very close by. Note: even though street parking is mostly restricted to vehicles with commercial plates, non-commercial vehicles are still allowed to pull up front as long as they are actively unloading or loading up.
The freight elevator is available to use any time 24/7. You do not need to reserve it in advance. We operate under the assumption that our clients will always need to use it for loading in at the beginning of the booking and loading out at the end, but it can be used any time during the booking as well. You just need to talk to the loft manager on site or the building’s doorman, and we’ll lock it down for you right away. There is no time limit on how long you can use it, though we do ask that you try to be as efficient as possible to keep things moving smoothly. The freight elevator is free of charge from 8am–6pm on weekdays. There is a $125/hour fee for use of the freight elevator before 8am & after 6pm on weekdays, and all day on weekends with a 3 hour minimum.
Our full elevator dimensions can be sent over on request. You can also let us know if you have any items that you aren’t sure will fit. Our staff can usually tell from experience what can fit in the freight elevator.
Pretty much anything you can imagine. Corporate events, branded and marketing events, fashion shows, product showrooms, fundraisers, performances, weddings, engagements, showers, private parties of all varieties, etc.
Our full rate card will be emailed to you when you send us an inquiry (gary@garysloft.com).
Our lofts are available to book 24/7, 365 days a year. There are typically some additional fees when booking late nights or weekends, but those will all be discussed ahead of your booking confirmation. Our rates are based on 10 hour days, but shorter or longer days can usually be arranged if needed (pricing TBD).
Discounts can sometimes be accommodated based on the size and nature of your event. If you are in need of a discount, please send us an estimate of how many people you’ll have in the space for the event (guests & staff), what your max budget is for the venue rental, and any other information that might be helpful. We’re always happy to have a discussion about pricing if needed.
Yes, we have a basic liability insurance requirement for all our bookings. Full details will be sent over when you’re ready to book.
The Penthouse, 11th Floor, and Roof each have 150 person capacities, seated or standing. The smaller 10th Floor has a 75 person capacity. If booking the Penthouse & 11th Floor together, the capacity can potentially be increased to 250 (to be discussed on a case by case basis).
All of our floors come with many individual outlets and 20 amp circuits. Connecting to our 20 amp circuits is free of charge. We also have a 200 amp electrical tie-in with cam locks that is available if you have any equipment with higher power requirements. There is a fee of $450/day for use of the 200 amp tie-in, but it should be noted that this is rarely needed by our event bookings. The 200 amp tie-in is much more frequently used by our TV, film and photo shoots, as they tend to bring in lights that have high power requirements.
Yes, you are welcome to sell tickets to your event. Just make sure to cap the number of RSVPs so that we don’t go over the capacity limits for whichever spaces you have booked.
If you look at our individual studio pages on this site, all the furniture you see pictured with each floor comes with that respective floor.
Yes, you are welcome to move the furniture around on the floors you have booked however you like. In fact, you can let us know exactly how you would like it rearranged and our staff will do it ahead of your booking. We’ll also put it all back after your event is wrapped out.
Unwanted furniture can be stored in a designated back-of-house area on the floor you have booked. Each floor has an area that works best for the back of house, and typically we’re able to fit all of the furniture that comes with each floor in that floor’s back of house, if you do end up wanting to store all of it away.
We don’t technically have a separate storage space for unwanted furniture, so if you want to have a significant amount of the furniture that comes with your floor removed from the floor altogether, you would need to book one of our other floors for storage. If you’re booking another floor just to use for extra storage and back-of-house space, we can usually do that for a discounted rate (price TBD on a case by case basis).
Yes, you are welcome to bring in anything you like. We have no restrictions on bringing in anything from outside and you can rent from any rental houses you like. We can recommend some good companies if needed.
You are welcome to transform the space in any way you see fit as long as you can restore it to its original condition by the end of the booking.
We don’t have any in-house catering or bar services, but we can always recommend some great companies who have worked here before. You are welcome to work with any outside catering or bar companies you like, we have no restrictions or required vendors.
Yes. You’ll just need to make sure that your insurance certificate includes Liquor Liability (or your caterer’s insurance certificate, if they’ll be providing and serving the alcohol).
Each floor comes with a few Sonos speakers that you are welcome to connect to to play music. We also have a two speaker, portable PA that you can use. We can recommend some good A/V companies and audio rental houses where you can source additional EQ and services if what we provide in house is insufficient for your needs. But just like with catering and furniture rentals, you are welcome to rent from any A/V vendors you like and bring in any EQ you need to make your event work.
Very few. Inside you can pretty much play music as loud as you like, whenever you prefer. We have very good sound insulation between us and other tenants in our building, so we never get noise complaints. If playing music on the Roof, there is a noise ordinance at midnight every night, so you would just need to bring down the level a bit starting at midnight if your event goes that late. In general our venue is a great place for music and amplified sound, whether from a DJ or live musicians.
Yes, we have a large dance floor that you can request to have set up wherever you like. You can also bring in a different one if you don’t like the look of ours.
There will always be at least one Gary’s Loft manager on site at all times during your booking to assist with anything related to the venue. We can refer you to some staffing companies if you need additional event staff.
We have several folding tables & chairs, and some clothing racks & hangers that you are welcome to use for your event.
Pretty much anything you can imagine. Film & TV shoots, commercials, still photography, combination video & still photography, editorials, music videos, small interviews, filmed podcast episodes, etc.
